- Prototype design was prepared in 1989-1999 in KnAAPO as converted serial Su-27UB - it was very quick process, because a design of airframe was adopted from Su-27SK and Su-27M. Su-30MKK incorporated, without changes, Su-27M centre wing section, wing panels, air intakes, tail beams, fins and landing gear and the Su-27SK tail-end fuselage assemblies. Only nose part was new designed.
- The first prototype was built in the spring of 1999 (converted from serial Su-27UB taken by KnAAPO from 60th IAP based at Dzemgi airfield in Komsomolsk-on-Amur), maiden flight took place in 05.1999 by test pilots I.Ye. Solovyov (Sukhoi Design Bureau) and A.V. Pulenko (KnAAPO). Next three aircrafts were built as new in 2000 (number 502, 503 and 504) and used as prototypes by Sukhoi Design Bureau for testing.
