Goal:

In the begining of 2001 russian air forces produces technical requirements for 1st stage of upgrade Su-27S/P, Su-27UB and Su-30 from its inventory. Upgrade aircrafts should be multirole with possibilities to use most advanced weapons: R-74, R-77, R-77M, Kh-29, Kh-31, Kh-59M, KAB-500, KAB-1500. Two programs was created since 1999: one by IAPO for Su-27UB and Su-30 (Su-30KN) and second by Sukhoi and KnAAPO for Su-27S/P (Su-27SM).

Near the mainstream projects, on March 2001 cheap and quick proposition of Su-27UB upgrade was proposed to air forces by Sukhoi, Irkut and United Consortium of Production of Air Equipment from St.Petersburg - Su-27UBM.

Current (2008) status:

Project Su-30KN was realised between 1999 and 2003. Then was canceled, after two prototypes, first preproduction aircraft and 4 aircrafts Su-27UB and Su-30 upgraded. Russian Air Forces declined from upgrade of Su-27UB and Su-30, due to lack of founds appropriated to more important upgrad of Su-27 to Su-27SM standard. Two Su-30 are in Lipyetsk air base.

Project Su-27UBM also was in 2003 was canceled, after one prototype built.

1st prototype Su-30M2 (Su-30KN) 03.1999 302 (blue)

First prototype of Su-30KN was built in the begining of 1999 in Irkutsk - it was serial Su-27UB, first upgraded to Su-30 standard. First flight 03.1999. Testing (quick and successful) in air range at Akhtubinsk 1999-2000. Long time was unpainted, in stunning new painting (desinged in Irkutsk facilities) was displayed for the first time in 02.2000 at Gelendzhik air show. In 11.2001 state tests were ended.

Up to end of 2001 two aircrafts Su-27UB and two old Su-30 from russian air force inventory were upgraded to Su-30KN standard.

? testbed 1999 05 (red)

To speed up a military test of Su-30KN in Akhtubinsk conducted in 1999-2000, serial Su-27UB from Russian Air Force inventory (no. red 05) was converted to testbed on which weapons are firing and testing.

T10PM2 ? 2nd prototype Su-30M2 (Su-30KN) 2000-2001 597

Used by LII (gromov Flight Research Intitute @ Zhukovskiy) old Su-27PU no. 597 built in 1992 was upgraded to Su-30KN standard and served as testbed and 2nd prototype. Aircraft was repainted in grey-blue scheme, renumbered to 02 and presented in 03.2001 at Zhukovskiy to high commander of Russian Air Force - general Anatoliy Kornuk. Also Su-30KN no. 302 and Su-27UBM no. 20 were displayed.

Later prototype was still used by LII as experimental plane Su-27LL.

Second prototype of Su-30KN (Su-30M2) in 2005 (then it was experimental plane Su-27LL).

T10PM2 ? 1st preproduction Su-30M2 (Su-30KN) 2001 07

Very little known aircraft, only from few photos (2002 and 2007) from Irkutsk facilities. It's a preproduction aircraft manufactured by IAPO before program Su-30KN failed. Camouflage like Su-30KN no 302, number: blue 07. After 2001 it's purpose remains unknown, but still in Irkutsk facilities (2008 satellite photos showing that without any doubts).

Informations collected in about 2001 are totally unclear, indicating that two military Su-27UB and two Su-30 are upgraded to Su-30KN standard. That aircrafts may be since 2006 in Lipyetsk air base (4 Cyentr Boyevovo Primyenyenya i Pyeryeuchivaniya Lyotnovo Sostava CBPiPLS = 4th Center of Combat Purposes and Retraining of Flying Personnel), in service of 968 Isslyedovatyelskiy Instruktorskiy Smyeshanniy Avyatsyonniy Połk (IISAP) = 968th Research and Instructor's Composite Aviation Regiment (squadrons are equiped with Su-27, Su-30, MiG-29, Su-24 and Su-25).

Curiously there's a two aircrafts in Lipyetsk apparently upgraded to Su-30KN standard from Su-30 (maybe it's a serials Su-30 transefered from Savaslyeyka), but both wearing the same number 67 (it not a mistake, they have different camuflage, but the same number!!!). First 67 appeared in summer of the year 2006 on 'regular' lipyetsks's painting: white nose, stripes in national colours. In that time another Su-30 has alod camouflage with stripes in national colours and number 66! Next year 66 was repainted and apparently get also number 67!

One of the Su-30KN from Lipyetsk air base, 2006, number 67.
Maybe (almost for sure) it'a an upgraded serial Su-30 from Savaslyeyka (since 2005 3958th Air Base = ex. 54th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment), after all now a branch of Lipyetsk training center.

1. In 1995 aircraft was prepared by KnAAPO from Su-27SK serial number 40-02, with air refueling probe and air-to-ground missiles mock-ups. It was pure demonstrator. Number: CMK, camouflage: standard chinese Su-27SK (flat medium grey on upper surfaces, flat grey on lower surfaces).

2. When 1997-1998 Sukhoi talks with Indonesia about selling Su-30, in 1998 aircraft was in hurry converted to demonstrator called Su-30KI, rebuilded using "chinese" upgrade kit Su-27SK (but retain air-refueling probe and OLS on right side). Aircraft with number 27 has a new camouflage - white and black waves on old grey background. First flight 06.1998, then shifted to Akhtubinsk air range for tests. Please note that aircraft has nothing in common with real Su-30 except name (it's the only one-seat aircraft with name Su-30!). When Indonesia refused to buy Sukhois, was unsuccessfuly offered to India, Vietnam and in 2001 to Malaysia.

3. In 2002 was rebuilt once again, to prototype of upgrade packet of the Su-27s, so it's name was changed to Su-27SM and for export Su-27SMK with new avionics, newest air-to-ground missiles. Bort number 305, camouflage as previous, but more waves on nose of the aircraft and inner surfaces of tail fins. It was presented on MAKS-2003 and many shows.

Current (2008) status:

First (and only) prototype of upgrade Su-27S/P to Su-27SM standard previosly served as demonstrator of Su-30SMK and Su-30KI. With new configuration of weapons, avionics from RBKB and radar N001V developed by NIIP named after Tikhomirov take first flight in 12.2002, then was displayed to public on MAKS-2003.

As testbed for specific equipment in 2001-2002 served Su-27PD no.598 from LII (ex. Kvochur's Test Pilots aerobatic team).

First four were delivered at the end of year 2004 to Lipyetsk air base, where were tested and next three upgraded Su-27SM were handed over to Russian Air Force in 12.2004 (numbers 82 84 86) for 23rd IAP (Fighter Aviation Regiment, 11th Air Army) at Dzemgi airfield, home airfield of KnAAPO at Komsomolsk-on-Amur. In 2005-2006 deliveries to Dzemgi continues and finished after 24 aircrafts - full regiment.

In 12.2007 started deliveries to next regiment of the 11th Aviation Army: 22rd GIAP (Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment) at Centralnaya Uglovaya (also Far East). Next batch of modernised aircrafts: November 2008, aircraft are armed with Kh-31P missiles.
